Old Business:

NRHA Dual Membership Pilot Program

Angela Broderick presented information about individual joint membership in both national and state organizations for one reduced price. The special offer varies from one state to another, depending on state dues. Our dues are $25; NRHA dues are $200.

NRHA prints and mails the flyers. Individuals not currently members of WVRHA and/or NRHA could be invited to join.

Issue was tabled until next month’s meeting

Technical Assistance Grant Request Update

(See Amy Elizondo’s email communications Patti sent previously.)

Patti Crawford discussed the TA grant. She did not feel that one-time TA grant monies for an annual conference session would comply with the grant. The opportunity for technical assistance is for funding a single event/activity for an association to improve/strengthen activities within the association.  Typically, SRHAs work with a consultant who assists with these types of activities. One major requirement is the SRHAs must have a board resolution in place to receive funding.  Approved activities for this type of assistance may include the following:

  • Board/Leadership Development
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Financial Planning
  • Fundraising
  • Grant writing
  • Marketing/Communications Planning
  • Member Growth/Retention
  • Organizational Development
  • Strategic Planning
  • Teambuilding
  • Volunteer Development

Patti felt this was something the board needed to look at maybe for the rural community forums. However, money was only available on a limited basis and usually ranged from $500 - $3,000.

Update on Rural Community Health Forums

(See schematic developed at the 3/26/07 Policy Committee meeting and 9/25/06 committee proposal.)

Sally Richardson discussed the idea of inviting RHEP/AHEC organizations to join us in conducting 4-6 community forums.

Motion for Policy Committee to send letters to AHEC/RHEP Directors (Tyler/Thompson)

State Association Council Report

·        At each national conference, states contribute an item for auction. Last year, WVRHA contributed a basket of WV items. Patti Crawford and April Vestal will work on this for the May conference in Anchorage.

·        The NRHA Skill Building Workshop is June 14-15, 2007 in New Orleans, LA. The registration/lodging deadline is May 17, 2007. Patti Crawford plans to attend and others were encouraged to consider attending. Patti will send details to board members. A $750 travel stipend is available from NRHA.

WVRHC Planning

·        The WV Rural Health Conference is October 24-26, 2007 at Glade Springs Resort. A specific time will be set for the board meeting held prior to the conference.

·        Jennifer Plymale, Marshall University, is the conference chair this year.

·        The Arnold Agency will handle printing of conference brochures, marketing, etc.

·        Sandra Pope and Patti Crawford attended the 4/13/07 planning meeting. They conveyed to Melissa Wheeler and others that WVRHA would like to have a session to present the results of community health forums.

·        Sandra Pope will send information to association members about the sessions along four tracks: Infrastructure, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Public Health.

·        Michael Thompson expressed interest in a securing speaker.

·        The 2006 conference cost was $105,000 for 125 full-time attendees. The budget for the 2007 is $75,000. This made it necessary to increase registration fees; the fee will still include $25 association dues. Negotiations are still in process with Glade Springs Resort on costs.
